Are you Living Yesterday’s Dream?

For 9 years I had been very happy with the company, then a major reorganization occurred which impacted my role. While I enjoyed working with my team and new manager, at a deeper level I knew I was out of alignment.

I threw myself into work hoping that working harder would resolve my inner conflict. After a week of not being able to sleep, one night at 3 a.m. I remember thinking, “Is this all there is?” What I was doing didn’t fulfill me anymore. There just had to be more to life – to my purpose.

Then came the announcement of the two waves of lay-offs. I knew based on my performance record that it was very likely if I were in the Southern California area my position would be safe, if I remained in Northern California I would be laid off.

I had a choice. Choose security and move back, or make a choice based on my priorities (family, small town living, working from home), which meant leaving a substantial income for an uncertain future. I chose to stay in Northern California believing that the universe is abundant and would provide what I needed and much more.

Heeding The Call Within

I immediately began the job search process and worked at it every day for 4 months. While my heart wasn’t into going back to a similar role I felt I needed to bring money in as quickly as possible. The company had provided a severance package, but I knew it wouldn’t last long with my current expenses. As the primary income provider for my family I needed to act quickly and do what I needed to do.

During that time I had a call with my mentor coach who asked me a question that turned my world on its end. She simply asked, “What would you do if you could do what you wanted to?” The words that came out of my mouth startled me. “I would launch a company focused on helping leaders discover, align with and achieve the vision and purpose for their lives.”

I took a long breath to let the words settle. The deepest part of me knew exactly what I wanted. This was the first time I had come clean with myself. I only had to be willing to listen to hear what was possible for me.

These changes led me to launch Visionary Leadership International. I did the work required to uncover my purpose and align my life's work with it. Now every day I wake up knowing I'm where I'm supposed to be, doing what I've been called to do. My life has taken on a meaning I never knew existed before this. Each day is about being open to the possibilities for my life.

This is just one example of the way my life unfolds on a daily basis. All of it came about as a result of me being willing to heed the call within me; being willing to hear and acknowledge a higher calling to my life.

To be continued…

This week I’m being reminded of what’s really important. I’m at a school science camp with my daughter’s class and sensing how much I might have missed if I didn’t attend it with her. It brings me endless joy to watch her having fun with her classmates and learning about herself in the process.

Having said that you have to know that it was a struggle to make the decision to go. I wanted to attend and support her but I felt like there was so much I had to do, so much weighing down on me, so much I needed to get done that week. I wondered how could I go and get it all done.

I found the answer. I couldn’t. I couldn’t get it all done. And even if I could there would be 30 more things to come in to take the place it to fill my time. As in much of life I had the opportunity to look at all the things that had to be done and figure out which meant the most to me.

What was my priority? I’m glad I made the right choice. My goal is to look back at the end of my life and know that I lived my life in alignment with my values and what I believe I’m here to do on this earth. It may sound like a lofty goal – but that’s truly how I want to live my life. As conscious leaders, is there any other way?

As leaders we live in a highly charged business environment. The new norm for organizations is to demand more and more from their people, leaving their teams to scramble to keep up. There will always be too much to do and often feels like there is too little time. So my question to you is – what are your priorities? I’m not just talking about your work priorities. I want to know what means the most to you in life. When you look across the landscape of your career, relationships, health and spirit – what are your priorities?

Your leadership is dependent on finding a balance between each of those categories based on the vision you have for your life and how you define success. You’ll know when you’re getting out of alignment when you feel like you should be doing something that’s not on your calendar. A wise person once told me that if you want to know someone’s priorities check their calendar and the checkbook. I challenge you to look at both of those this week and see what you find. If it’s not what you want it to be take 1 small step to align with your values and priorities. It will be worth the effort.

Leaders are doers. They are willing to do what others are not – that’s why we call them “lead” ers.

The most important factor in your leadership success is you. If you're not making the difference you're capable of you have the opportunity to first look within to identify what might be holding you back.

As a business leader, think of it like a stream blocked by a log jam somewhere upstream. To get the results flowing you do not have to clear the entire log jam. Removing just one or two strategic "logs" may be all it takes get the results you want to start flowing.

From Success magazine, here are a few things extraordinary leaders do:

They do what’s scary or uncomfortable

They press forward into new territories and uncharted waters

They do what’s right and hold true to core principles (their core principles) and what’s good for the majority – or they won’t be a leader for long

Leaders do when others aren’t doing – when other’s are scared, confused, lose hope or paralyzed. That’s when leaders take the helm and carry everyone forward

Leaders do themselves. They don’t just ask you to listen to their words they ask you to watch what they do

Leaders do for others. The greatest leaders do the scariest act of mankind – they become even greater than themselves.

Leaders do what is unpopular –even at the risk of power & prestige and the favor of others waning, they are still courageous enough to follow their gut and lead even in the storm of vehement opposition.

Defy average. Be or become the extraordinary leader you were born to be. The world is waiting for you.

There has been a huge shift in business over the past few years. While the shift to more conscious business practices had been coming for quite some time, the stock market crash in 2008 made many of us realize how important this change in philosophy was for our success as a nation and the world. This caused many people to step back and re-evaluate what is truly important to them. At the same time, with the advancement of technology and social media, the world is getting much smaller. Consumers today are much more informed and have many more choices.

There’s also another element that has impacted the face of business which has not been addressed as widely as the other two. There’s a spiritual awakening that’s been taking place during the last 20 years and really picking up steam in the last five years. As individuals experience what spirituality means to them it has impacted their choices and preferences as consumers.

Because of these trends, what consumers want and need has changed in a number of ways:

Community – with technology the world is getting smaller but people often feel isolated and alone. So people are looking for a sense of community- to connect with those who are like minded. It shows the majority of Facebook users find it a place to connect with like-minded people who can support each other, dream together and further each other’s goals.

Relationship – it’s not just about closing the deal. It’s about developing relationships with people, connecting with how you can be of service to them and doing the right thing to do – even if that means you refer them to someone else because you can’t help them.

Education – People don’t want to be “sold” to. Consumers today can spot that a mile away and are resistant to that kind of business approach. They want to be educated about their choices and the benefits. That changes how you market or promote your business.

Anticipation – Because we’re so busy consumers today want you to anticipate what might help them or improve their lives. It’s about understanding your market, what they need and how your products and service can benefit them.

Trust – People want to know that you have their best interest at heart and will do right by them – that you’ll do what you say you will do. Be real with your clients. Only promote what you can do – do embellish – just be authentic and you’ll establish trust with your audience.

Service & Support – Consumers today are hungry for quality service and support. Since we’re all so busy the last thing consumers want to do is struggle to get service and support. In today’s sea of automated response systems and email ticket systems – consumers have to work too hard to resolve problems that may come up. Businesses that provide quick, timely and direct service and support systems shine.

For the leader, understanding how and why these shifts are occurring can make a difference in how you connect with and maintain your clients and customers.

Every great leader comes to a point where they question themselves. They ask, “Who am I to dare to reach for my dreams or accomplish what others dare not consider?” Who am I? Don’t you know that… Can’t you see that…” And it’s not unusual for these kinds of thoughts to kick in as you begin to achieve success.

We all ask the same questions, often not realizing that those who seem so sure of themselves are often the least sure but they are willing to fearlessly pursue what they believe to be right.

But greatness is exactly what you are called to. It’s in those moments we humbly realize that we can’t do it alone that we surrender to a higher power and become the vessel for the dream or accomplishment to be birthed.

You are called to step out knowing that where you place your feet the path below you will appear. Oftentimes we don’t see the path first. Usually the big vision is apparent, but not the way to get there. All you have to worry about is getting clear on the WHAT and the HOW will present itself.

I’m reminded of the story about David and Goliath. David just had to show up in faith. Goliath was God’s problem – not David’s. David refused to use weapons he wasn’t familiar wtih, instead choosing to be himself and use what he knew would work. It would have been easy for David to act differently in such a critical moment. Showing up in faith and being authentic were the hardest parts for David.

The only one who can keep you from your purpose on this earth is you. If someone doesn’t respond then bless them and move on with joy knowing that the message wasn’t for them. In the same vein, no matter how poorly we may deliver the message, no one can keep away those who are called to hear.

You create your reality. You can be confident that if you listen every answer will be provided. Don’t accept other people’s limiting beliefs for your life. Favor, blessings and abundance are your portion. If you don’t quit you will see your highest purposes fulfilled.
